501C3 for DX Marathon, Inc

Posted on June 19 2025 by Mark Wohlschlegel • WC3W

I am excited to announce that DX Marathon is about to be granted the a non-profit 501C3 status by the Internal Revenue Service.
We have been working on this for quite some time, but today, I spoke with an IRS agent handling the case and there appear to be no further obstacles in granting us this status. I know a number of hams that were awaiting this as they wished to allocate some of their RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) towards our program. What this means to our organization, is that:

  1. Federal Tax Exemption

The organization is exempt from federal income tax on income related to its exempt purpose.

Contributions to the organization are not taxed as income, allowing it to devote more resources to its mission.

  1. Tax-Deductible Donations

Donations made to the organization are tax-deductible for donors, encouraging more contributions, especially from individuals and foundations.

  1. Eligibility for Grants and Private Funding

Many foundations, corporations, and government agencies require 501(c)(3) status before they will consider awarding grants.

Opens up a larger pool of potential funding sources.

  1. Reduced Postal Rates

Qualifies for nonprofit mailing privileges through the U.S. Postal Service, offering significantly reduced postage rates.

  1. Credibility and Public Confidence

Signals legitimacy and accountability to donors, partners, and the public.

Provides public trust, particularly when listed on the IRS database of exempt organizations.

  1. Perpetual Existence

As a corporate entity with nonprofit status, a 501(c)(3) organization continues to exist regardless of changes in leadership or membership.

  1. Access to Volunteers and Donations of Goods

More likely to receive in-kind donations (goods, services) and volunteer support, as many businesses prefer working with recognized nonprofits.

I expect we will have this status by mid to latter part of the month of July. Thank you,
